From Liquid To Stick, Here’s How To Apply Foundation Like A Pro

Destination Wedding Makeup

Foundation is such a magical thing, isn’t it? A few drops here, a few dabs there and voila! your skin looks as flawless as ever! The key to getting that right, however, lies in how you apply it –– a little bit off the rails and you can end up looking like something out of a horror movie. Foundation comes in different forms, all of which have their own purpose and end goal, whether you choose to go with a light dewy base or a full-on glam face. We give you a step-by-step guide on how to apply foundation on your face –– from liquid, to stick, to powder, whatever you choose to be the face makeup product for your base, we’ve got you covered (from light to medium to full).

Remember, any kind of base needs to be prepped and primed first. So always start with a primer or a moisturiser, in order to make the most out of your makeup products

How To Apply Foundation Liquid Foundation

When it comes to full coverage foundation, liquid is always your answer! It may seem a little daunting at first, but don’t worry, once you get the hang of it it’s the perfect foundation base. Here’s how to apply foundation like a pro.

Step 1: Pump The Product

Take a few pumps of your liquid foundation on the back of your hand. Using clean fingers, dot the foundation equally across your face and neck.

Step 2: Blend. Blend. Blend.

So there are a couple of ways of going about with this step –– there are several makeup accessories you can use to blend. You can use your fingers to blend the product into your skin. Make sure they’re clean before you go at it! By using your fingers, you are able to get a more natural finish, and you’re also able to go into the nooks and crannies of your face.

Not comfortable using your fingers? Try using a foundation brush. Using a fluffy, tapered brush with synthetic bristles will help you apply more product and blend it easily into your skin. The last thing you can use to blend your foundation is a beauty sponge –– however, this needs to be slightly damp for best results. This gives you an airbrushed effect, especially if you dab, instead of rub!

Feel free to bake your under eyes with a little banana powder to set it nicely.

How To Apply Stick Foundation

Stick foundations are probably the most effective foundations, especially for the girl-on-the-go. This buildable foundation gives you an even medium coverage and can be built up to cover those blemishes too. Paired with your favourite concealer, there’s nothing this foundation cannot cover! Here’s how to apply stick foundation.

Step 1: Roll Out The Stick

Twist the tube so that you can see a bit of the foundation over the edge. Swipe it across the areas of your face, focusing on your cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. You can even dot a little on your under eyes too.

If you don’t want to contaminate the stick, you can use your fingers to apply it.

Step 2 - Use A Blending Brush

Make sure you either use your fingers to blend, or use a blending makeup brush to do so. Don’t use a sponge as this will absorb more product into it, rather than blend it into your skin. Since you're not using a liquid it makes sense to prime your face prior to application, to ensure that it blends in smoothly. Top off with some setting powder for a more matte finish.

How To Apply Powder Foundation

If you’ve got oily skin or a shiny t-zone, powder foundation is the way to go.

Step 1: Add A Moisturising Primer

You can’t give this step a miss –– especially if you’re using a powdered foundation. Apply a pea-sized amount of primer on your fingers and massage it into your face. Focus on your t-zone and cheeks, especially the areas that tend to get greasy. Wait for 2 minutes before going in with the next step.

Step 2: Apply The Powder

Apply the powder using a wide brush, that’ll easily pick up the powder and give you more coverage. If you’re using loose powder, simply tap some in the lid and then swirl your brush in it. Always tap the brush to remove the excess product from it, and then blend it on your face. Go around in circles with your brush and tap it into the skin, to make sure you’re applying it evenly.

You can even use a sponge, especially if you’re using a compact powder. This’ll help soak up any excess oil on your skin too.
