Instagram Is Obsessed With Foam Rolling To Reduce Cellulite But Does It Actually Work?

Intrigued? Well, the miracle method we’re talking about is foam rolling. This technique has been around for years and mostly used for stretching and toning the body.

What Causes Cellulite?

Before we get into the solution, you first need to understand what it is and why it happens. The most popular theory of what causes cellulite is the collection of fat underneath the skin. Everyone has a layer of fat separating their skin and muscles; cellulite is formed when the skin present above certain areas of fat is pulled down to the deeper tissues by the connective tissue bands. This leads to an uneven surface. Once your skin starts to lose its elasticity and thickness, it starts to reveal the connective tissues underneath.

Cellulite can occur anywhere on your body- the hips thighs, buttocks, arms and even near the breast area. Genes, body fat, age, body type are all these factors that play a part in the development of this skin condition. 

Does Foam-Rolling Actually Work?

Well, the foam-rolling method is not exactly false, but it’s not a permanent solution either. According to many experts, while this does help reduce the visibility of cellulite, it is, however, a temporary solution. Foam rolling loosens the fascia, smoothens out the fat underneath the skin, and eliminates the lumpy areas, in turn reducing the visibility of cellulite while also encouraging lymphatic drainage in cellulite-prone areas. So, in short, this method sort- of works. It does reduce the appearance of cellulite on the body, but only for a short period of time.

Foam-Rolling Exercises To Reduce Cellulite

The Back-Thigh Roll

For this, you will need to sit on the floor and keep your legs stretched out in front of you.

Place the foam roller on your upper thighs, right below your butt and keep your hand planted on the floor behind you for support with your fingertips turned inward, facing your backside.

Next, slowly lift your body up while keeping most of the weight on your hand and start rolling back and forth, in turn moving the roller in the process. Do this daily to reduce the visibility of cellulite on your thighs.

The Tush Roll

To reduce cellulite near your buttocks, simply sit on top of the roller with your heels on the floor in the front and your hands planted on the floor at the back. 

Once you’ve got a good grip, roll the hips and drop your knees down toward the right, then to the left. Continue rocking back and forth for 8 to 10 reps. This will help strengthen the collective tissue and flush out toxins from the body. 

While you might not be able to get rid of cellulite permanently with this method, it does give you temporary relief from it by promoting lymphatic drainage, while also increasing the flow of blood to all parts of the body, leaving you with glowing, cellulite-free skin.
