We contacted a pro to get the full deets on the laser hair removal process and bust any myths that are hindering you from getting it done. Dr Sushant Shetty, who is the Head of Medical Operations at Kaya Limited and has experience of over a decade in Dermatology, Cosmetology, Dermocosmeceutical & Cosmetic surgery spilt all the deets on this procedure while also debunking a few myths in the process.
One of the most common questions when it comes to laser hair removal treatments is related to the pain intensity. We aren’t going to lie; it is not pain-free but it hurts a lot lesser than waxing. It feels like warm tiny tingles on your skin. Depending on your growth, the laser hair removal machine and the technique, the pain is manageable. “Laser hair reduction is a service that is not as painful as waxing and epilating. Even shaving can be painful due to cuts and razor burns that can easily happen to your skin – especially in sensitive areas. There are several cooling technologies that are used to make your session extremely comfortable. Sometimes a numbing, cooling gel is applied before the session to make your skin numb.”, says Dr Sushant Shetty.
When it comes to the different kinds of machines used and their efficacy, here’s what Dr Sushant Shetty had to say about it, “At Kaya, we have the NDYAG Laser and the Diode Laser. Results and benefits do vary slightly in terms of speed, efficacy on skin/hair type. It is best to speak with your dermatologist to understand what your skin needs to give you the desired results.”
There is a myth that laser hair removal is not beneficial for those with deeper complexions. While this may have been true when the treatment just hit the market but in 2020 it is deemed as completely safe for all skin and hair types. NDYAG and diode—work for dark skin and dark hair, so you don’t have much to worry about. “After the dermat checks your skin and hair growth, the dermat will recommend the technology you have to go for. It is keeping in mind your complexion and hair colour.”, stated Dr Shetty.
Another common question about laser hair removal is the number of sessions it takes to get baby-smooth skin and how long it will stay that way. Well, Dr Shetty states that the results vary from person to person, but you will need 6-8 sessions to see up to 90% hair reduction. If you do the treatment as given by the dermatologist, you can live hair-free for up to 20 years.
When it comes to the density and thickness when the hair grows back, you don’t have anything to worry about. “In 6-8 sessions, you will notice a reduction in hair growth. The thickness and density of hair will reduce.”
20 years without worrying about body hair removal --- now isn’t that the dream!?
Dr Sushant Shetty states, “The lasers used in laser hair removal do produce a very small amount of radiation. However, this radiation is not harmful, and there is no evidence that laser hair reduction therapy causes skin cancer.”
“There are higher chances of skin burns due to hot waxing!” says Dr Shetty. “Laser hair reduction technologies do generate heat that destroys your hair follicles. But it does not harm the surrounding skin. It only works on your hair. It will not cause any pigmentation, ingrown hair, or discolouration of the skin.”
Now that your doubts on laser hair removal have been cleared by an expert, it’s time to give this treatment a shot if you are tired constantly worrying about having to wax.
