Back To Basics: How To Apply Kajal Like A Pro
Kajal is probably the first ever makeup product every Indian girl owns. It’s like a rite of passage! And although eyeshadow palettes, mascaras, liquid eyeliners all followed after, it still remains one of the best and most reliable eye makeup products. With an array of choices in different styles, colours, formulations, finishes, and textures, a kajal goes above and beyond providing you with that basic makeup need. Although it may be the most loved, it is often the most ignored (or taken for granted) product in your makeup routine. Scroll down to see how to apply kajal and make the most out of this beautiful makeup essential!
How To Apply Kajal
While it may seem pretty clear-cut, in order to make the most out of your kajal you need to know how to apply it correctly. Since your eye area is sensitive, you need to pay extra attention to the application. Plus, thanks to sweat, humidity, and heat, you’ll often find your kajal to run or smudge first. Therefore it’s important to know how to apply kajal.
Step 1 - Prep Your Eyes
Make sure your eyes are free of any debris or lash hairs. Remove all traces of oil on the eyelids by using a face wipe. Dab a little primer on your eyelids and wait for it to dry. This’ll keep your eyeliner in place and make it more long-lasting, without smudging. If you want, add some concealer to hide any under eye dark circles.
Step 2 - Glide The Pencil On Your Lower Lash Line
Gently glide the kajal on your lower lash line. Start by filling it in from one end to the other. Make sure the outer corners are more prominent and darker than the inner corners. This’ll give you the illusion of bigger eyes.
Step 3 - Add Another Layer If Required
If you want to intensify your look, feel free to go over the lines. Start from the outer corner and work your way inwards, as this’ll prevent any excess product from getting into the inner corner of your eyes.
Step 4 - Use A Brush To Smoke It Out
You can either use a smudging brush to smoke out the lower lash line. This will soften the lines and make the kajal less jarring.
Step 5 - Tightline Your Upper Lash Line
Define your eyes even more by applying the kajal to the inside of your upper lash line. You can skip the liquid eyeliner if you’d like. This trick also makes your lashes look longer without any mascara.
Step 6 - Intensify It By Going Over Your Eyelid
Instead of applying a liquid eyeliner or felt tip liner, go over your upper eyelid with a kajal pencil to create that perfect wing. Start thin and then thicken the line based on what kind of look you're going for.
Step 7 - Smudge It Out For A Smokey Effect
If you’d like you can use an angular brush to smudge the harsh lines to create a nice smokey effect. Apply a neutral eyeshadow to the top of the lid and finish off with a mascara for a bolder intense look.
Tips And Precautions To Be Followed While Applying Kajal
As mentioned above, kajal application seems like the most basic makeup product, however it can be a little tricky to use. Since it’s in the eye region, it can often irritate your eyes and leave your vision a little hazy. Follow these tips and precautions when applying your kajal.
Don’t use a very sharp pencil when you’re applying it in your waterline as it can scratch your eye.
Don’t apply your kajal in a moving vehicle.
Wear contact lenses? Make sure you go with a waterproof and smudge proof formula to avoid it from spreading into your eyes.
Do not share kajal pencils. Eye infections are the most contagious kinds, so in this case sharing is not caring.
Avoid using expired eye products to prevent infections.
Take off your eye makeup with an oil based remover to ensure no traces of products remain.
Try to avoid kajals with glitter or shimmer in your waterline. Feel free to use them on your eyelids to create that cat eye though.
