We all know the importance of cleansing –– it’s literally the first part of your CTM routine. Over the years the methods in doing so have evolved. We went from using soap bars to face washes to face cleansers, and while all have worked wonders for our skin, they’re not enough. Thanks to the myriad of environmental factors ready to pollute your skin –– dirt, grime, excess oil, pollution –– just cleansing doesn’t cut it, especially when you want your skin to be deep cleaned. Step in the double cleansing method. Now, what is double cleansing? It’s a technique that ensures you remove ‘the day that was’ without stripping your skin off its natural oils.
Want to know what is double cleansing? Double cleansing is an age-old method that helps you cleanse your skin off its impurities without damaging its moisture barrier. It involves pairing two skincare products together –– one is oil-based and the other is water-based. Double cleansing is great for removing all traces of makeup, dirt, grime, and all other impurities that sit on your skin throughout the day.
Following the concept of two are better than one, double cleansing isn’t as time-consuming as one would think. It is a two-step process that’ll just add a couple of more minutes to your regular skincare routine. Scroll down for the double cleansing method and what you need to be doing in order to achieve perfect results.
STEP 1 - The First Cleanse
For this step, you can either use a micellar water, oil-cleanser, or cleansing balm. If you’re using micellar water, apply it on a cotton pad. If you’re using a cleansing oil or balm, use your fingertips.
STEP 2 - Massage It In
Use your fingers or cotton pads to massage the product into your skin. This will gently but effectively break down any sort of residue such as makeup, sebum, or sunscreen. This is a crucial step of double cleansing.
STEP 3 - Rinse It Off
Splash some water on your face and rinse off the product. You can continue massaging it in circular motions, to ensure the residue is completely off.
STEP 4 - Time For The Second Cleanse
Take a small amount of your face wash and massage it into your skin, as you usually would. You can either use your fingertips or a face cleansing device when doing so.
Step 5 - Rinse & Pat Dry
Rinse the lather off your face –– make sure you wash it off your jawline and hairline too! Pat dry and move on to your toner, serum, and moisturiser. Tada! Double cleansing, done right.

Dry Skin: People with dry skin types should opt for a gentle and non-irritating formula. Try looking for ingredients such as cacao, berry, black currant extracts, vitamin E & B5, and Allantoin, helping you to get rid of damaged skin, and dullness leading to glowing skin.
Combination skin: For people with combination skin types, look for cleansers that’ll avoid oiliness without letting your skin feel dry. So it’s better to choose an oil-based cleanser. You can look for ingredients such as rosehip oil, and vitamin A that’ll help you brighten and hydrate your skin and smoothen out your wrinkles too.
There are so many double cleansing benefits that people aren’t aware of! Other than leaving you with squeaky clean skin, double cleansing also holds a whole lot of amazing skincare advantages that’ll help improve the overall appearance and health of your face.
Just washing your face doesn’t effectively remove all traces of makeup. Double cleansing as a way of makeup removal makes sure the most stubborn products i.e. mascara, foundations, liquid lipsticks, all come off without leaving a trace.
Excess oil is a magnet for dirt and grime, which often results in breakouts. Double cleansing ensures that your skin’s sebum levels are balanced and also removes the impurities that could possibly clog your pores.
When your skin is free of impurities, makeup, and sunscreen residue, it is able to absorb other skincare products a lot more effectively. Double cleansing helps remove that layer, just so that they penetrate deeper into your skin in less time.
A lot of the time, deep cleansing the skin often dries it out as it strips the skin of its natural oils. By double cleansing, you are effectively cleaning your skin and nourishing it at the same time.
Continuously double cleansing helps improve the texture and appearance of your skin too. Without the added layer, your products work better resulting in glowing and radiant skin.
Double cleansing method is meant for any and every skin type –– however, what you choose to double cleanse with is what matters most. For example, if you’ve got dry skin it makes sense to opt for a cleansing balm in your first step. People with oily skin shouldn’t be afraid of using an oil cleanser in the first step –– this actually helps balance out the oil levels in your skin and prevents sebum buildup.
