Some That Help Treat Acne-Prone Skin

Salicylic acid, tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide are ingredients that are beneficial in controlling sebum production in your skin, thereby helping treat and prevent acne-causing bacteria.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid which is derived from a plant willow bark. It has an excellent exfoliant action plus also prevents the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. It is also a good option for oil control for people with really oily skin. Tea-tree oil is another integral part of anti-acne face washes. It is essential oil of an Australian native tree and has long been utilized for its anti-acne properties. It definitely soothes inflamed skin.

Another good constituent in face washes is benzoyl peroxide which kills the acne-causing bacteria.

Tea tree oil too helps with acne, it helps regulate your skin's sebum levels thereby controlling and preventing acne. It has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that keep the acne-causing bacteria at bay.

We asked Dr. Siddharth Garekar, Founder and MD, Garekars M.D for recommendations on some easily available and effective over the counter face washes that you can use to keep those pesky breakouts at bay... Here's what he recommends.

"The Avene Clenance Gel (Rs 1,097) is generally well tolerated by all skin types and controls sebum secretion to prevent excessive shine. You can buy this one without worrying that it will dry out your skin. The Cipla Saslic Ds Foaming Face Wash (Rs 275) and the Torrent Ahaglow Skin Rejuvenating Face Wash Gel (Rs 310) are two more face washes I recommend to patients but only after close evaluation of their skin type. One needs to be more careful with Saslic and AHAglow as they could lead to excess dryness especially if you are on other anti-acne medications/ creams or retinol based creams. So, its always advisable to consult your dermatologist before adding something to your current skincare regimen. I always advise my patients to follow up the facewash with a non-comedogenic moisturiser such as the Ducray Ictyane Hd Emollient Cream (Rs 442) or the Sesderma Hidraloe Aloe Gel Face & Body (Rs 1,440)

If you're looking for something a little more affordable there are a few cosmetic brands such as Clean & Clear Pimple Clearing Face Wash (Rs 55) and Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash (Rs 411) also offer face washes with salicylic acid as an active ingredient"

Coming to terms with acne in your middle and late twenties can be hard. We asked Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta, Founder & Medical Director at ISAAC on a few effective ways we could treat the problem from getting more severe.

"Adult-onset acne which erupts in our late 20s, 30s or beyond. Clinical studies estimate it can affect up to 50% of women at some point in their adult life. Treating adult acne is not easy since traditional topical medications are best suited to oily, teenage skin. These types of medications can be drying and actually worsen fine lines and wrinkles in adults. Thankfully, there are good treatment options available to help improve breakouts while slowing down the signs of ageing. Depending on your skin and the severity of your acne we recommend a specific line of treatment that can be one or a combination of cleansers, creams, medication and IPL treatments.

Cleansers: Mild cleansers without fragrances can be helpful to cleanse the skin, but not strip the skin of natural oils. Avoid strong gels and products containing beads or granules, which are abrasive and can irritate skin leading to inflammation and worsening acne. The Avene Clenance Gel (Rs 1,097), Bioderma Sebium Gel Moussant (Rs 672) and the Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash (Rs 2,400) are some good cleansers you can try.

In combination with face washes, prescription medication and peels (both laser and chemical peels) can improve both acne and the early signs of sun damage.

If you have problematic skin, we recommend adding in an acne face wash to your routine, but definitely consult a dermatologist if your acne is severe.
