FAQs

What Are Polygel Nails?

Polygel is a nail enhancement best described as a hybrid formula that combines the durability of acrylic nails and the elasticity application of gel nails. Polygel is a leading nail enhancement on the market as it offers the nail professional the time and space to really deliver on sculpting and constructing the most intricately structured nail. The process and the materials used in the manicure, though, are actually quite different. Polygel, which is sold in a tube much like toothpaste, is a mixture of acrylic powder and clear gel. Polygel also has a putty-like consistency and is extremely easy to apply and shape.

How Are Polygel Nails Applied?

Curious about the whole process? Here’s a glimpse of what to expect if you attempt to do a poly gel manicure on yourself or if you book an appointment with your nail technician to get it done.

Step 1: Nail prep: The first step is sculpting the natural nail into the desired shape. Similar to gels, your nail stylist will prep your natural nails by making sure they are free of polish. Next, the cuticle (the thin layer of tissue attached to the nail plate) is removed and the nail plate is buffed.

Step 2: Apply the Polygel: After applying a dehydrator on the natural nails, either an acid-free primer is used or a gel base coat will be applied using a small, precise brush. This will be placed in the center of your nail, starting with a small bead or ball, like they would with acrylic.

Step 3: Smooth the formula: Dip a brush in a solution made specifically for Polygel, smooth the product out so that it covers your entire nail, shaping it as per your liking. The gel can form literally any nail shape.

Step 4: Cure the nail: After the Polygel is applied, place your nails under an LED or UV lamp for about 30 seconds. Depending on the style you want, you can repeat the previous two steps to apply another colour to your nail.

Step 5: File and shape. Polygel is much softer than other options, so you don’t have to use an e-file to shape it. A hand file will get the job done, smoothing out any uneven areas or bumps, as well as helping define the shape you want.

Step 6: Apply your finish: Whether you want a shiny or matte finish, you can apply a top coat to seal in the DIY Polygel nails as per your preference.

Step 7: Cure the nail: Your nails will again go under a nail lamp. Unlike gel nail polish, Polygel doesn’t leave behind a tacky layer on your nails, so after curing, you’re good to go.

Step 8: Cuticle lotion or Oil: Is a manicure ever really complete until you’ve moisturised your cuticles? We think not. Apply cuticle oil at the base of each nail and give yourself a quick hand massage with lotion.

How Much Do They Cost?

The price for a Polygel nail kit will depend on the type of Polygel application. Gel nails cost Rs 2,200 onwards with refills starting at Rs 1,500.

Polygel, Gel Vs Acrylic: What’s The Difference?

In some ways, Polygel is better than acrylic. Since polygel nails don’t harden until they’re cured under an LED or UV light, they are superior to acrylics. What about gels? Well, polygel nails are supposed to be stronger than a gel manicure. There are several ways in which polygel manicures tend to outshine acrylic nails for these reasons. It has the strength of acrylic but is lighter, stronger, and more flexible. Because of this, Polygel nails are less likely to break off. Plus, Polygel is easier to apply—it doesn’t require the tedious mixing of powder. Finally, polygel is odourless and no chemicals are released into the air with the application, unlike in acrylic. Overall, the formula is meant to combine and enhance the things we know and love about gels and acrylics and get rid of the aspects that we don’t, resulting in an option that’s strong and lightweight.

How Long Do Polygel Manicures Last?

Polygel nail has been circulating our social media feeds for quite a few reasons, but one stands out in particular: how long it lasts! With the proper care and application, a Polygel extension manicure can last up to three to four weeks. The longevity of your Polygel manicure will also depend on the length of the nail and your lifestyle. If you’re involved every day with activities that are rough on your hands, your Polygel manicure may not survive the full month. Polygel, like acrylics, is certainly more expensive than a basic gel manicure and it lasts almost twice as long. If you get a light nude or pink color, it’s hard to tell when the manicure has grown out, making it last even longer than you might think.

Are Polygel Manicures Safe For Nails?

Another reason Polygel needs to be on your radar? If applied and removed properly, Polygel manicures are perfectly safe for your natural nails. In fact, Polygel nails can be considered safer than other nail enhancements like acrylics as no chemicals are released into the air during application. But keep in mind that Polygel nails should always be removed by a professional.
