The 10-Step Korean Skin Care Routine Explained

Destination Wedding Makeup

The 10-step Korean skin care routine became a global phenomenon early last year and still continues to be a favourite for many around the world. If you’re intrigued as to what exactly this skin care routine is, well, don’t worry, we’re here to explain it all and help you get the skin you desire. There's no need to get overwhelmed by the number of skin care steps either! We've simplified it to help you understand this skin care routine so that you can achieve healthy, younger-looking skin. One thing to keep in mind while practising this K-Beauty routine is that it's all about the process, sticking to it and not eliminating any step.

Step 1 - Oil-Based Cleanser

The very first step of this 10-step K-beauty skin care routine is using an oil-based cleanser to remove your SPF, makeup, dirt and other oil-based impurities that are on your skin. It’s important to remove your makeup at the end of the day and make sure that nothing is left behind.

What does it do: Removes any oil-based remnants, giving you brighter skin.

Step 2 - Water-Based Cleanser

The Korean skin care routine includes a double cleanse so once you’re done with the oil-based cleanser, move on over to a water-based cleanser as this helps remove any impurities that might cause pimples. In the end, your skin ends up feeling clean and grime-free.

What does it do: Removes sweat, dirt and other impurities leaving your skin clean and fresh.

Step 3 – Exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin helps clean pores and remove dead skin cells giving you visibly brighter and smoother skin. But unlike cleansing, this K-beauty skin care step doesn’t have to be done on a daily basis. Once or twice a week is good enough. If you have sensitive skin, it’s beneficial to exfoliate only once a week.

What it does: Exfoliating your skin once or twice a week unclogs pores, stops breakouts, and removes dead skin cells.

Step 4 – Toner

The next step in the Korean skin care routine is using a toner. Toners are the forgotten hero. Skin toner helps balance the skin’s pH levels and prepares it for the next steps. So toning is a must! You could either dab it on with a cotton ball or apply it with your fingertips.

What does it do: Removes leftover residue on your skin and balances your pH levels.

Step 5 – Essence

Another forgotten product in the skin care routine is face essence but for Korean women, this is a must. Essence acts like both a toner and serum. It helps hydrate the skin and also aids in cell repair while reducing the signs of aging.

What does it do: It helps prime your skin and helps the serums and creams penetrate the skin.

Step 6 – Serum / Booster

After applying the essence, your skin is now ready to absorb the boosters and serums and work its magic. The ingredients in these skin care products help boost the skin’s elasticity, eliminate acne and leave you with smoother, glowing skin.

What does it do: Targets the problem areas and leaves you with healthy skin.

Step 7 – Sheet Mask

Sheet masks became popular just around the time the 10-step Korean skin care routine became the 'IT' thing around the world. This is another step that can be done once or twice a week. Sheet masks help brighten, control acne and hydrate your skin. There are also different types of sheet masks available in the market that cater to your skin type.

Step 8 – Eye Cream

Admit it, eye cream isn’t on top of your skin care steps. Well, it’s time to change this. The skin around your eyes is the most sensitive and delicate part. Regular use of eye cream helps remove puffiness, dark circles and also reduces the sign of wrinkles.

Step 9 – Face Cream

Next on the Korean skin care list is moisturizer. There is a wide range of moisturizers available to suit your skin type. These plump up your skin, making it soft and supple.

Step 10 – SPF

Finally, the 10 and last step to this K-beauty skin care routine is layering on the SPF. Sunscreen isn’t only for the summer. Wearing sunscreen every day before stepping out is the easiest way to prevent premature aging and protects your skin from UV rays.
If you're doing this Korean skin care routine at night, you can go ahead and use night cream.
