Long, Luscious Lashes: Your DIY Guide To Making An Eyelash Serum At Home

We're on a 21-day lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak and the least we can do is take care of ourselves and our bodies. Apart from eating nutritious food, cutting our nails short and washing our hands frequently, we must set some time aside for our beauty routine too. No, I'm not referring to colouring your hair or perfecting that winged eyeliner, but I'm stressing on little things like making sure that you moisturise your skin post-cleansing, apply hand cream when your hands feel dry and worn out due to the frequent usage of hand sanitizers, oiling your hair to boost hair growth, slathering on a thick coat of lip balm to keep your pout hydrated and finally, using DIY ingredients to make a serum for your lashes!

Speaking of the latter, your lashes are probably one of your most underrated features and if you do look after them, they'll reward you by growing and thicker and longer. While there are a variety of eyelash serums available in the market, now is not the time to spend your moolah. You've got save your pennies for the rainy day and focus on the stuff that you already have at home. The good news is that an eyelash serum is something you can make at home with ingredients from your kitchen!

Your DIY Guide To Making An Eyelash Serum At Home

Grab a notebook and a pen, I'm going to tell you what you need.

  • Castor oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Old mascara container
  • Spoolie (optional)

Why castor and coconut oil? I'll tell you why! Castor oil is rich in Vitamin E, fatty acids and proteins. The oil manages to penetrate deep into the hair follicles and will provide nourishment and hydration to lashes. Coconut oil too does a good job at making your lashes healthy and strong. It's loaded with vitamins, fatty acids and protein that help keep your lashes protected and from root to tip. Here's the recipe.

Step 1: In a bowl, add 1 tablespoon of castor oil.

Step 2: Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and stir well using a toothpick.

Step 3: Find an old mascara jar and clean it with soap and water, use a long toothpick rolled up with tissue paper and make sure you get rid of all the mascara residue from the inside.

Step 4: Pour the mix into the empty mascara jar.

Step 5: Use the mascara brush to apply the mixture onto your lashes and brows every night before bed.

Step 6: Don't wash the oil off your lashes, leave it on overnight.

Do this every day for 3 weeks and you'll notice an immense change in the length and thickness of your lashes.

Alternatives to Castor Oil

In place of coconut oil & castor oil, you can also use almond or olive oil - it all depends on what you have at home at the moment. And if all else fails, you can always use vaseline on an old mascara wand too!

This is a tiny self-care ritual you can try at home for long, luscious lashes. And always remember, clean the mascara spoolie with soap and water after every use to avoid contamination!
