Guide On How To Use A Face Scrub Effectively

how to use face scrub

Exfoliation is the key to healthy and happy skin. In the hierarchy of skincare products, we’d say face scrubs or exfoliators are at the top of the food chain –– after all, it’s the one product that helps you take off a layer of your dead skin cells. In doing so, it also reveals the shiny new layer that sits beneath. Once the dead layer of skin cells is removed, your skin is able to absorb your other skincare products a lot better. However, the way you scrub your face makes a huge difference to the results –– over exfoliation can lead to irritation, redness, and sometimes even breakouts. Here’s everything you need to know about exfoliation –– from how to use a face scrub to tips and tricks on making the most out of your exfoliator.

How To Use A Face Scrub

It’s quite clear cut, isn’t it? However, oftentimes people make a lot of mistakes when using a face scrub. Scroll down to see how to use a face scrub to exfoliate your face and make the best out of your product.

Step 1 - Cleanse

The first step on how to do scrub on face is to cleanse the skin. Always make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly before you apply a face scrub. Use a mild cleanser to remove any debris, dirt, and excess oil, and prep your skin for an exfoliator. By doing this, you’ll get to know how to use scrub and face wash!

Powered with natural ingredients, this brightening foam cleanser removes makeup, and dirt, and gives your skin an iridescent glow. Not only this, but it also leaves your skin supple and soft.

Step 2 - Take The Right Amount

Take a dime size amount of your face scrub and apply it to your palm. Add a few drops of water to soften the formula and gently rub it between both hands. Do not apply it dry, as the scrub can get a little too abrasive on your skin.

Step 3 - And On To Your Face

The next step on how to use exfoliator on face is to warm up the product on your palms. Make sure you spread the face scrub evenly in your palms –– and then slowly apply it on your freshly washed face. Remember, your face needs to be wet too, or else the application will not be smooth (and will most likely irritate your skin).

Step 4 - Massage Well

Massaging the face is another way on how to apply scrub on face. Using the tips of your fingers, gently massage the face scrub on your skin in circular motions. Do this for about 45 seconds. No matter how tempting it may be to scrub away, please make sure you do not vigorously rub the product into your skin. This’ll cause microtears and it will not leave your skin happy. Avoid the under eye area and the area around your mouth as it’s very sensitive.

Step 5 - Rinse Away

Once you’re done massaging the face scrub on your skin, rinse the product with some lukewarm water. Pat your face dry with a towel –– make sure you’re gentle, and don’t rub the towel on your face.

Step 6 - Finish Off With A Moisturiser

This is the last step on how to apply scrub on face. You always want to follow up a good exfoliation session with a moisturiser. This’ll keep your skin nourished, supple, and well hydrated –– and since you’ve sloughed away the dead skin cells, the moisturiser will be absorbed way better into your skin.

How To Use Face Scrub: Things To Keep In Mind!

While exfoliation is a step all of us love in our skincare routine, it’s also the most misused. Because you are stripping your skin off it’s dead layer, it can become very sensitive –– hence, you need to keep a few things in mind when using a face scrub. Read the tips you need to know on how to use a face scrub

Go By Your Skin Type

Dry skin - How to use face scrub for dry skin? Use face scrubs that have a creamy texture and are filled with moisturising ingredients. Make sure you exfoliate only once a week –– over exfoliating can strip your skin off its natural oils.

Oily and combination skin - Use face scrubs that have flower and fruit extracts present in them. This’ll help combat the excess oil and keep your acne at bay. Gel formulations work best for your skin type. You should exfoliate twice a week, for best results.

Sensitive skin - Don’t worry, sensitive skin peeps can also use face scrubs. Look for ingredients that are anti-inflammatory and will help soothe your skin while exfoliating it. Just make sure to do a patch test before applying it on your face, to prevent any surprises or shocks later!  Once a week or even once in ten days should suffice, especially if you tend to react to slightly abrasive products.

Do Not ‘Scrub’

Just because it’s in the name, doesn’t mean you literally do it. Always be gentle with your skin, especially when you’re exfoliating. Massage the product in without rubbing.

Stay Away From Active Breakouts

Another tip on how to use face scrub is do not apply a face scrub when you’ve got active breakouts. If you are exfoliating, then try and stay away from those areas and most definitely do not scrub it in. By doing so, you will break the skin around your pimples and will also spread the bacteria elsewhere.

Round Over Square

Make sure that the exfoliating agent in your face scrub is rounded and not squared, as it can cause microtears in your skin when you massage it. Rounded beads are far more effective and less harsh on the skin.

Use A Mask

If you want to go the extra mile and lock in hydration, then apply a mask just after washing off your scrub. This’ll help add moisture to your skin and protect it from any external factors. Once you wash off the mask, you can complete the routine with a moisturiser.

Do Not Steam

It’s a bad idea to steam your face before scrubbing it, as the heat can make your skin super sensitive. Steam post a scrub, before applying your mask if you’d like. This is one of the best tips on how to use face scrub!
