#Beauty101: Is A Shower Gel Really Different From A Body Wash?

FB-bath.jpg

When you think about it, a shower gel and a body wash seem like the same thing, don’t they? They both cleanse your body and lather up and get the job done. However, in reality, they are different from each other. In fact, based on your skin type you should actually steer clear of one of them to avoid breakouts, skin irritation, or excessive dryness.

It’s important to know this difference between shower gels, body washes and bar soaps so that you can avoid what isn’t suited for your body and choose the product that works best for your skin concerns.

What Is The Difference?

The first difference between body washes and shower gels is the texture. Although they’re both in the liquid form, shower gels are firmer, thicker, and have a gel-like consistency. On the other hand, body washes are thinner and have a texture similar to that of liquid soaps.

Body washes have more moisturising and hydrating properties compared to shower gels. This is because they are rich in moisture and occlusive agents like mineral oil and petroleum. Some of them even use ingredients like emulsified petrolatum which is basically an ointment for your skin to retain moisture even during cleansing.

For this reason, people with dry skin should use a body wash instead of a shower gel because your skin will be saved from excessive dryness and flakiness.

Shower gels are less moisturising and thus work better for people with oily skin. They are also well suited for sensitive and acne-prone skins since most of them have a cooling formulation featuring sea extracts and cucumber.

These also make for the best product to use in humid and warm climates, body washes are great to switch to during the winter months because your skin tends to get dry, dehydrated, and flaky during this time.

They also differ in fragrance- shower gels have a higher concentration of fragrant substances than body washes. This makes them more liked by people who like strong scents and would like if the fragrance stays on even after the shower. These are usually refreshing fragrances like refreshing lemon or citrus-like scents to dessert-like scents from cocoa butter, strawberry, and vanilla.
